It was a night to remember at the Grammy Awards this past Sunday. The evening was made even more special by a tribute to the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, produced by Questlove. But one of the most anticipated guests, Will Smith, was nowhere to be seen. So, what happened? Read on to find out why Will Smith wasn’t able to join the celebration.
Questlove explained to Variety that Will Smith had originally planned to be part of the tribute to hip-hop, but had to cancel due to a scheduling conflict. Smith is currently shooting for the upcoming ‘Bad Boys 4’ movie, and had to attend some preliminary shots.
Before becoming an actor, Smith was a rapper and his iconic 1991 hit “Summertime” is now an anthem of the season. Last week, Smith and his co-star Martin Lawrence announced that they were beginning work on the “Bad Boys” sequel.
Smith also made headlines last year when he stormed the stage during the Oscars telecast and slapped Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. After the slap, Rock presented Questlove with the Academy Award for best documentary feature for the film “Summer of Soul.”
Although Will Smith wasn’t able to join the celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, it was still a memorable night. Questlove’s tribute was a fitting way to honor the genre and its many legends.
